DESPERATE U.S. WILL REVOKE “TERROR” LABEL IF HOUTHIS STOP RED SEA ATTACKS
April 5, 2024According to recent reports, the United States is contemplating the possibility of rescinding the designation of the Houthis as a terrorist organization in an effort to halt the rebel group’s assaults on ships in the Red Sea.
U.S. Special Envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, emphasized the necessity of seeking a diplomatic resolution, as Houthi attacks continue to impede progress in the broader peace process of the Yemeni conflict.
“My hope is that we can find diplomatic off-ramps,” Lenderking said.
Donald Trump originally designated the Houthis a terrorist organization in January 2021, in one of his last acts in office. The Biden administration later reversed this decision, citing the designation’s likely exacerbating effect on the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.
But on January 14th, the Biden administration re-designated the Houthis as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT) entity amid the red-sea attacks.
Now it’s a matter of diplomacy?
The reality is the U.S. knows the Houthis have got ALL THE LEVERAGE and are gravely impacting the world economy and they can keep doing that for a long, long time. So, now America wants to play nice guy.
Let’s see how the Houthis respond.
