NICARAGUA SHUTS GERMAN EMBASSY AFTER ICJ CASE
April 12, 2024Nicaragua announced the closure of its diplomatic mission in Berlin, Germany yesterday, noting that the Central American state’s consular tasks and official businesses in Germany will now be handled by the embassy in Austria.
This comes after Nicaragua took Germany to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) due to Germany’s failure to abide by the 1948 Genocide Convention by participating in “the ongoing plausible genocide and serious breaches of international humanitarian law and other peremptory norms of general international law occurring in the Gaza Strip”.
“There can be no question that Germany…was well aware, and is well aware, of at least the serious risk of genocide being committed,” Nicaraguan Ambassador to the Netherlands Carlos Jose Francisco Arguello Gomez said in his opening statement to the ICJ.
“Germany is failing to honour its own obligation to prevent genocide or to ensure respect of international humanitarian law.”
To be noted, around 1000 Germans live in Nicaragua and a few hundred Nicaraguan nationals live in Germany.
Despite Germany rejecting Niacragua’s allegations, the former has decided to proceed with the case.
“Germany was and is fully conscious of the risk that the arms it has furnished and continues to furnish to Israel,” could be used to commit genocide, Alain Pellet, a lawyer for Nicaragua told the judges during the hearing at the ICJ.
All states aiding Israel in its genocide MUST be held to account.
