ISRAELI SETTLERS DESTROY ARMENIAN HERITAGE GREATEST EXISTENTIAL THREAT FACING JERUSALEM’S CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY
April 15, 2024The existence of the Armenian Quarter in the Old City of Jerusalem is at risk as Israeli settlers are in the process of destroying its ancient Christian heritage and replacing it with commercial property.

This Armenian community – the oldest Armenian diaspora in the world – has seen its population decline from some 27,000 people a century ago to about 1,000 today.
Yet, with each attempted demolition, the community flocks in numbers at a moment’s notice, standing in the way of bulldozers while withstanding threats of arrest and armed intimidation.
The Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem has described recent attacks on the Armenian community as the greatest existential threat to ever face Jerusalem’s ancient Christian community.

Armenian man: This is our land, this our property. My family’s presence alone pre-dates the State of Israel. So to use the “we were here before” argument it doesn’t really stick with Armenians over here because we’ve been here since the fourth century. We’re dealing with a private company with the state of Israel, and it’s an uphill battle. But everyone over here, their resolve is unmatched, basically. We will stay here to the very end. This is our home. This is our heritage. This is our livelihood. So we will stay here until the very end, no matter the consequences.
