BREAKING NEWS UN TO VOTE ON STATE OF PALESTINIAN STATEHOOD TOMORROW
April 18, 2024A draft resolution put forth by Algeria recommends to the 193-member UN General Assembly that “the State of Palestine be admitted to membership of the United Nations.”
The resolution needs at least nine votes in favour to pass the Security Council and no vetoes from the US, Britain, France, Russia or China. The vote will take place tomorrow.
Diplomats told Reuters the measure could have the support of up to 13 council members, but the US is expected to block the effort because it would effectively recognise a Palestinian state.
Riyad Mansour, the Palestinian U.N. Ambassador, said 140 countries recognize the state of Palestine, and “we believe it is high time now for our state to become a full member at the United Nations.”
U.S. Deputy Ambassador Robert Wood pointed to another obstacle.
“The U.S. Congress has adopted legislation that in essence says that if the Security Council approves full membership for the Palestinians outside of a bilateral agreement between Israel and the Palestinians … (U.S.) funding would be cut off to the U.N. system.”
