HEZBOLLAH RETALIATORY STRIKES INJURE 14 ISRAELI SOLDIERS G7 MEETS TO DISCUSS SANCTIONS ON IRAN
April 18, 2024Lebanese militia group Hezbollah has claimed responsibility for an attack on a military facility in northern Israel that wounded at least 14 and IDF soldiers and four civilians, saying it was carried out in retaliation for Israeli strikes that killed Hezbollah members a day earlier.
Hezbollah said it launched “a combined attack with guided missiles and explosive drones on a new military reconnaissance command centre in Arab al-Aramshe,” an Arab-majority village of northern Israel near the Lebanese border.
The attack comes a day after Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon killed three people, including a Hezbollah field commander identified by the Israeli army as Ismail Yusaf Baz.
According to the Israel Defense Forces, 14 of the victims were soldiers, including the five listed in critical and serious condition. The four civilian victims were all lightly hurt.
This comes as the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers are meeting on the Italian resort island of Capri with its top agenda item being imposing new sanctions on Iran.
Under Italy’s stewardship of the rotating presidency, the G7 leaders are expected to issue a united call for Israel to exercise restraint after Iran’s retaliatory strike. Italy supported targeted new sanctions against Tehran, specifically against the makers of drones used in the weekend attack and others launched by Tehran-backed militias in Lebanon, Gaza and Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
“It’s very important to do everything to isolate Iran,” European Council President Charles Michel said.
