ICC POISED TO ISSUE ARREST WARRANT FOR NETANYAHU
April 28, 2024The International Criminal Court’s (ICC) British prosecutor, Karim Khan, is poised to issue arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and senior Israeli officials over the war in Gaza, according to The Sunday Times newspaper in Britain and Israeli media.
Haaretz analyst Amos Harel writes that the Israeli government is working under the assumption that the ICC’s prosecutor, Karim Khan, may this week issue warrants for the arrest of Netanyahu, Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.
Israeli media platform Walla, stated that Israel and the United States are engaged in a last-ditch diplomatic effort to prevent the ICC from issuing the warrants adding that Netanyahu was “under unusual stress” over the prospect.
Should the United Nations (UN) tribunal in The Hague, follow through with the warrant it would mark an historic move and be a major deterioration in Israel’s international status.
In retaliation to the news, Netanyahu responded defiantly saying that any decisions by the ICC, which is investigating Hamas’s October 7 attacks and Israel’s military response in Gaza, would not affect Israel’s actions but would set a dangerous precedent.
This final statement by Netanyahu is pure provocative rhetoric and demonstrates his flagrant disregard and disrespect for international law and all international institutions.
Meanwhile, Israel’s Foreign Minister Israel Katz in an interview with N12 in Israel called the potential warrant an “absolute hypocrisy.”
With 124 permanent members, the ICC can prosecute individuals for war crimes, crimes against humanity, genocide and aggression.
The ICJ, also known as the World Court, is a United Nations court that deals with disputes between states while the ICC is a treaty-based criminal court focusing on individual criminal responsibility for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
The US, which, like Israel, is not among the 124 countries that signed the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, is pursuing every avenue to block the arrest warrants.
