UNIVERSITY OF AMSTERDAM STUDENTS PROTEST CRACKDOWN ON PRO-PALESTINE PROTESTS
May 16, 2024Students and staff at the University of Amsterdam staged a powerful walk-out on Monday, protesting the crackdown on previous pro-Palestine demonstrations by local authorities. Last week, riot police violently dismantled a Gaza solidarity encampment on campus at night. Despite the crackdown, pro-Palestine protests continue to rise, showing unwavering solidarity with Gaza.
Once again, the walk-out ended with riot police forcefully dispersing demonstrators, but the spirit of resistance remains strong. ✊🏽🇵🇸

English Script:
Raoul Koudijs: We’re here today for a massive teacher and student walkout at the University of Amsterdam at the same site we did our original encampment, where the police brutally bulldozed us away. We’re not having it any more, people have seen the true face of Zionism. We’re facing a genocide. We cannot go on teaching class like we used to. We see the true face of Zionism, also in Netherlands now, seeing the police oppression, seeing the bulldozers, feeling a little bit of what the people in Palestine have felt for the last 100 years. And it shocks us, it horrifies us.
Sam Hamer: Months on end, students and staff behind the scenes have been writing letters to the College Board, to the board of directors, have been going into the debates with them, organizing lectures, organizing peaceful sit ins, organizing whatever you can to get the UVA to break ties with organizations complicit in human rights violations. Yet there seems to be almost no, if not nothing happening at the board level. And these past couple of days, you can see that frustration erupting. It should have never gone this far. We have very reasonable demands. We simply don’t want to be complicit in human rights violations and to crack down on a protest that asks for something so reasonable in this way means that there is a clear infringement on the right to demonstrate. And it’s a clear sign of something going wrong at the UVA.
