MY DOOR STOP INTERVIEW WITH AMOS HOCHSTEIN
May 17, 2024It is not often that you turn around at an event and find Amos Hochstein, the US Special Envoy to Lebanon standing behind you.
Well that’s exactly what happened of me a couple of days ago. The event was being hosted by the American Task Force on Lebanon in Washington D.C. and like any self-respecting journalist I knew I couldn’t allow the opportunity to pass without asking him a question. Which is exactly what he allowed me – ONLY ONE QUESTION.
As it was a Lebanese event and Israel has been threatening to invade Lebanon, I decided to ask him whether America was committed to preventing the Gaza war exploding in Lebanon.
Of course his answer was yes, but I was not convinced. I don’t know if I am a pessimist or a realist. After witnessing how impotent America has been is stopping Israel butchering the Palestinians, I did not get any comfort from his reply.
So I am not holding my breath. Sadly I feel my prediction is more likely after Israel launched some of its worst and heavist striken deep into Lebanon only yesterday.
It doesn’t look good for Lebanon and even worse for Gaza!
WHO OR WHAT CAN STOP ISRAEL? WHY HASN’T THE INTERNATIONAL COMMUNITY STOPPED ARMS SHIPMENTS, IMPOSED SANCTIONS, DECLARED ISRAEL A PARIAH STATE?
THESE ARE THE ONLY ACTIONS THAT WILL SHAKE ISRAEL INTO LISTENING AND ENDING ITS TYRANNICAL OPPRESSION AND WHOLESALE SLAUGHTER.

English Script:
Daizy: Hi, I am Lebanese, I am Australian Lebanese. I am hearing a lot of (inaudible) situation for Lebanon and I wanted to ask you, do you mind if I ask you few questions?
Amos Hochstein: (inaudible)
Daizy: That’s really hard. Hochstein, you’ve been to Lebanon, you know trying to avoid this conflict coming to Lebanon, you know what’s in Gaza, the situation there. I really want a straight answer, is America really against the war coming to Lebanon?
Amos Hochstein: Yes.
Daizy: The extension of the war going to Lebanon?
Amos Hochstein: We will do whatever it will take, we will do whatever we can to make sure that we don’t see an escalation of the conflict.
Daizy: Are you going to avoid the conflict coming to Lebanon?
Amos Hochstein: We want all Lebanese to live in security.
Daizy: And you’ll do everything you can to keep peace, to bring peace to Lebanon?
Amos Hochstein: Absolutely, absolutely.
Daizy: Seriously? Can we trust the words of the American administration? because we heard so much.
Amos Hochstein: That’s already question three.
Daizy: I know.
Amos Hochstein: President Biden, truly cares and has made sure that myself and the entire team, the U.S. government, do everything we can to resolve the crisis along the pa to allow the Lebanese people to return to their homes in the south, to allow the Israeli people to return to their homes in the north, to make sure that Lebanon can return to a path of security and stability and peace and prosperity. As Secretary Blinken just said, the commitment of the United States to Lebanon, has always been there. We continue to support the Lebanese armed forces, the internal security forces, the political dialog, the economy. But we need to have more of a partnership with the Lebanese people to demand for themselves that their leaders elect a new president, that their leaders commit to reform, that their leaders commit to transparency and openness in the economy.
It is our job to support the Lebanese people demanding that change. And as long as Lebanese people will demand that change, the United States government will be there for them to ensure that change is doable, feasible and supported by us and the international community.
