Deema Said: Since the second we landed to the airport, we saw nothing but love. To be able to see the Palestinian flag rising freely in Ireland, while we can’t even do it in Palestine, in the Palestinian territories, in the West Bank. It is overwhelming. It gives us such joy that it’s hard to explain.
So for us to be here, is amazing. And hopefully one day we’ll get to host Ireland as well. We’re playing this match on Nakba day and while, genocide has been committed in Gaza as well. Hundreds of athletes have been targeted and hundreds have been murdered. It’s really hard for the players to be in their sports mindset, to think just about the game. We carry their message, the people have lost their lives. We keep them in our hearts deeply. And this is why we play: We play for them.
You feel like they see with one eye. And for us as Palestinians, we believe this is a great injustice. We have many people that have lost their lives, lost their limbs, or are currently in prison. We believe that FIFA holds a responsibility to hold people accountable when they’re committing war crimes. And we want to push them to start, taking actions against the Israeli teams.
We carry a message of love and peace and existence. And this is our way of resisting because we believe resistance comes in many ways, and sports and participation is one of it.
