IT’S EASY TO BACK A MORAL CAUSE ONCE IT’S OVER
July 2, 2024Chris Hedges, an author and journalist, highlights how easy it is to choose the right side of history AFTER THE FACT!
What’s more difficult is WHEN the atrocity or genocide is taking place to stand up and advocate against the wrong.
Today, we see many who condemn the apartheid in South Africa, or side with liberal movements across the world STAND ASIDE and REMAIN SILENT when a genocide in Palestine is taking place.
These people are cowards. They claim to be moral yet they cannot muster the courage to stand against genocide.

English Script:
Chris Hedges: How will the conflict in Gaza read in history books 50 years from now? Well, we’ll all be indignant and wring our hands and say never again. And it won’t mean anything, because we always stand up for moral causes after those causes are over. But to stand up for a moral issue in the moment is costly. And of course, people will bathe themselves with the moralists of the past, but then very rarely replicate that courage in the present. So once it’s over, I mean, look, we’ve got a postage stamp with Malcolm X face on it. I mean, the state is complicit in the assassination of Malcolm X, clearly. But that’s because the liberal class is morally bankrupt and the liberal class is used to go after dissidents, critics. When I opposed the Iraq war, who were those who sought to discredit me, they were liberals. And Chomsky writes quite presciently about this. He said that they set those moral lines. When you actually begin to critique the system itself, then they must destroy it, because what you’re doing is challenging their own position as the moral center of society.
