BIBLICAL BYBLOS
August 2, 2024I feel like I am living in two Lebanon’s. The one on the brink of war with Israel, and the other, the enchanting, biblical land whose history dates back many millennia and whose charming, cobblestone streets and stone archways allow you to forget the imminent threat and escape into the bossom of its beauty.
I had the chance to do just that this week when I was invited to attend the opening of “Byblos Embracing Beirut” Art Exhibition hosted at The House in the coastal village of Byblos (Jbeil) some 45km north of Beirut.
I was transported into another world and captivated by the creative work of Lebanese artists, especially that of Dubai-based Lebanese painter, @suzinassif whose Rebirth painting was an entrancing piece of art – at once capturing the bloodstained streets that marr the land’s journey through history, whilst embodyng the spirit of life represented in the beauty of the pregnant woman protecting and procreating the soul, spirit, hopes, memories, dreams and dreamers, courage and lifeforce of the Lebanon that lives within all who truly know this abused but not abandoned precious jewel.
Surprisingly, Suzi turned out to be a follower of mine, and I returned the compliment after delving into the genius of her creation.
It was a delightful experience and a momentary distraction from all that threatens to destroy this tiny, magical, yet tenuous country, cuddling the eastern Mediterranean.
