Interviewer: Just a few days ago, we saw Netanyahu give a speech to Congress. I do want to ask about what you made of the American elected officials who were clapping and, you know, standing ovations and whatnot?
Chris Hedges: Well, that’s the power of the Israel lobby, AIPAC in particular. So our Congress is bought and paid for and has been for decades. Biden, by the way, took more money from the Israel lobby than any other Senate candidate. I think he still holds that record, and he hasn’t been in the Senate for, I guess, 12 years. He spent eight years as a vice president or more than that, and then almost four years as president. So yeah, they’re bought and paid for and they were cheering their major funder, in essence, or the Israeli prime minister, who their major funder has long supported. AIPAC, by the way, has a very strong political orientation. I know, because I covered the election between Rabin and Netanyahu and AIPAC funded and supported Netanyahu through PACs and advisers and everything else. So there’s long been a political orientation, especially after Oslo and Netanyahu is hand-in-glove with the Israel lobby. He’s a creation of the Israel lobby, really, in essence, as a political candidate. And the deep pockets that the Israel lobby has allows in to essentially buy up the American political class. And so that’s why you saw everybody standing and cheering a war criminal. I mean, it was it was a kind of deeply embarrassing and sobering sight. But I think it also illustrates, to what an extent the United States has become a pariah, along with Israel. The fact that you would invite, someone who, is being investigated as a war criminal, it’s not just a term we’re throwing out, he’s been investigated by the International Court of Justice as a war criminal. So that they would invite him, it just shows you how checked out, both Israel and the United States have become from the global community.
