U.K. TRADE UNIONS VOTE FOR ARMS EMBARGO ON ISRAEL
September 12, 2024British trade unions voted on a motion to demand all arms trading with Israel be ended immediately, sending a clear message to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The Labour Party is heavily reliant on trade unions for political support, votes and funding, and so this vote at the TUC conference – which represents 5.5 million workers and 48 unions – is putting pressure on the Starmer government to stop British arms from supporting Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
Starmer’s Labour Party has been unclear since 7 October about whether they would back a permanent ceasefire in Gaza, haven’t committed to a full arms embargo and have repeatedly defended Israel’s right ‘to defend itself’.

English Script:
Louis Regan: Palestinian trade unionists have called for the global trade union movement to pressure organizations and companies complicit with Israel’s crimes. That call makes explicit the need for trade unions to build the BDS campaign, and to make that union’s apartheid free zones. We cannot and we must not stop until there is a permanent ceasefire, until the genocide is ended, until all the walls of apartheid are dismantled, until the day when Palestinians are finally, finally free. Please support the motion. Let’s join together and fight for justice for the Palestinian people.
