World leaders called out Israel’s genocide at the UN
September 29, 2024“We South Africans know what apartheid looks like. We lived through apartheid.”
At the UN General Assembly, leaders from Colombia, South Africa, Nigeria, Senegal and Chile called out the failures of the UN and Israel’s allies to enforce a ceasefire in Gaza, and condemned Israel’s policies of apartheid and dispossession against Palestinians.
“Entire generations have grown up in Palestine in the shadow of oppression,” said Senegal’s president, Bassírou Diomaye Diakhar Faye. “That 1% of humanity, the powerful global oligarchy, is what allows bombs to be thrown at women, the elderly and children in Gaza, Lebanon or Sudan,” said Colombia’s president, Gustavo Petro.

Daizy Gedeon: Hi everyone, today I’m forced to leave Lebanon. I’ll be catching one of the last flights leaving from Lebanon due to the untenable situation that has eventuated over the last few days and week since Israel started bombing Lebanon very heavily. Advice has been given to me from sources within Lebanon and outside that it is going to be a long and protracted battle that Israel will of course strike targets that are known Hezbollah sites or what they presumed to be Hezbollah locations, but their intention is to punish the Lebanese people for allowing Hezbollah to continue in the country, like we have a choice, like the Gazans and the Palestinians had a choice with Hamas. It’s not a choice, but the reality is that there’s going to be collective punishment. My fear is that Lebanon may end up the same way Gaza ended up, and I don’t feel it is my responsibility or it is, and I don’t feel that I can continue to serve the people of Lebanon, whom I moved from Australia to serve and help, support people working against the corrupt oligarchy that controls the country. That same oligarchy is equally responsible to Hezbollah for leading Lebanon to the situation we’re in today. Hezbollah is without doubt responsible for engaging with Israel on October 8th, and without doubt responsible for contributing to lead us, to here. But my point, as I raised in my film, the documentary film I made, which was released in 2021, called “Enough: Lebanon’s Darkest Hour”, stands to this day. My point remains that Hezbollah alone can’t and couldn’t have got Lebanon to where it is today, and Hezbollah alone is not responsible for the devastation that is about to strike Lebanon. Where is the Lebanese government? Where are the members of parliament? Where is the entire political system and leaders, the leaders who claim to be defending Lebanon, fighting Hezbollah, fighting corruption, fighting all that has led Lebanon to this economic disaster that we’re in and now about to face a complete annihilation, potentially by Israel. Israel held no punches in 2006, when in 34 days it devastated the country, bombing everything from Hezbollah areas to utilities to coastal towns, to roads, bridges that went the length and breadth of this country. So, if anyone thinks that Israel is going to take a more controlled approach to this attack, this time around, they’re going to be sorely wrong. So, my decision to leave reluctantly came because I want to continue my work for Lebanon, and my mission is to help Lebanon, help Lebanon recover and install a democratic, peaceful, principled government that will lead our people and our nation back into the arms of civilization really, and democracy and into the global international system, because right now we are far from that. I will come back and I will continue my reporting. My team will still be based here. I’m lucky I can leave, but millions of Lebanese, including members of my team, do not have that privilege, but I will return as soon as I can, as soon as it’s safe so I can continue to serve Lebanon, serve humanity, serve truth and justice. Thank you for always watching, thank you for supporting, thank you for engaging, and please continue to stand up. We need more people around the world to stand up. The silence of still the majority of people around the world is deafening and it’s allowing the Zionists, allowing those complicit with them, America, England, France, Australia, Germany, Canada and so many other nations, to allow them to get away with this. Israel will not stop until we put terms and conditions and consequences, and to this day there have been no consequences imposed on Israel. We need the voice of the masses around the world to force Israel to take action and stop, to bring Israel to the negotiating table. Only our voices with our leaders in our countries, our demands on a mass level, will force that to happen. We want peace for all, we want peace for the Israeli people, for the Jewish people, but also for the Palestinian people, the Lebanese people, the Congolese, the Sudanese, all those under oppression, all those suffering. We must stand together and fight for this. Thank you.
