AUSTRALIAN FOREIGN MINISTER HECKLED OFF STAGE FOR ISRAEL SUPPORT

The protest came during her announcement of the government’s humanitarian policy, as voices demanding justice for Palestine could not be silenced.

Penny Wang: To our toughest problems, a world when…
People from the crowd: Israel is burning people alive.
Penny Wang: You know, this is a very distressing…Well, I don’t actually believe, I know I’ve never believed that we gain anything by shouting each other down. What was our most ambitious multilateral agenda in years…
People from the crowd: Australia abstained. We abstained.
Penny Wang: And in order to protect civilians, we must also protect…I’ve actually…My goodness. Part of what I’m doing in this speech to anybody else who wishes to speak but not listen, is actually trying to lay out some of what we are doing in relation to what is happening in Gaza.
People from the crowd: You should be ashamed. What we need right now is leaders that have backbone are willing to do something that isn’t just talk. You’re our representative.
Penny Wang: Do you want to hear what I have to say, or do you just want to shout at me? Right now, the suffering across the region must end in this…
People from the crowd: Sanction Israel then.
Penny Wang: I think I will be speaking…Can I just say thank you to all of you. I appreciate the spirit of the discussion, perhaps slightly one way at times, but I certainly appreciate all of you who have sought to listen to what I’ve said.
People from the crowd: It’s one way, because you don’t listen to our emails, you don’t listen to our calls, we wouldn’t have to be yelling at you if you listen to us.
