IDF STRIKES HISTORIC CITY OF TYRE DECIMATES BEIRUT OVERNIGHT
October 25, 2024Israeli jets have struck multiple buildings in Lebanon’s southern coastal city of Tyre, sending up large clouds of black smoke.
Tyre, a provincial capital, had largely been spared, but strikes in and around the city have intensified recently.
The city, which dates to the Bronze Age, about 80 kilometres south of Beirut, is known for its pristine beaches, ancient harbour and imposing Roman ruins and hippodrome, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is among Lebanon’s largest cities and a vibrant metropolis popular with tourists.
The buildings struck overnight were between several heritage sites, including the hippodrome and a cluster of seaside sites associated with the ancient Phoenicians and the Crusaders.
In other news, Israel continued to strike Beirut, decimating much of its civilian infrastructure.

Al Jazeera correspondent: The Israeli military earlier today, issuing forced evacuation threats for the first time to residents in the southern city of Tyre. Now, this is a very historical city and is home to a world UNESCO Heritage Site as well. This city, the port city, was once home to nearly 200,000 people. Now, since the fighting escalated between Hezbollah and Israel in mid-September, many people started leaving the city as well, but there were still people left there. But they were forced really to leave today, and it’s not clear how many of them managed to get out. What is clear that Israel has used seven airstrikes in various parts in the center of Tyre to target what they claim to be Hezbollah command and control centers of the southern front. That is the division within Hezbollah that is dealing with the fighting in the southern part of the country, with Israel.
