John Sawers: For Israel, they’re watching this carefully. After the 1973 war, when Israel occupied the Golan Heights, that part of Syrian territory. That’s actually been quite quiet. One of the good things for Israel in the last 50 years is that they haven’t had problems on their border with Syria. They will be nervous about this. They’ve had a sort of implicit understanding with the Russians that the Russians would help ensure that the Syrian regime would prevent, attacks across the Golan Heights from Syria. And in return, the Israelis have done nothing to undermine the Syrian regime is a sort of dirty, unwritten deal between Israel and Russia. But the Israelis now will be watching with great uncertainty about what’s happening, and they’ll probably be planning what Phil Collins was describing, which is a worst-case scenario of this going badly wrong, and Syria breaking up into smaller units with armed groups who could well turn that fire on Israel at some point. I think that’s less likely at the moment, but it’s certainly not impossible, and the Israelis will be watching this very carefully indeed. I think the Israelis are going to have to come to terms with Turkey on this, because Turkey is going to be the main power broker.
Piers Morgan: Let me just start with your overview of what is happening in Syria and how significant you think it is.
Jeffrey Sachs: I think it’s interesting, as you pointed out. The U.S. calls HTS a terrorist group, but obviously the U.S. is a part of what’s happening these days. Jake Sullivan said, well, yes, it’s a terrorist group, but it is giving Assad a run for his money. Wink, wink. This is a U.S., Israel, Turkey operation. It is part of Netanyahu’s long-term game plan that goes on for 30 years to overthrow governments throughout the Middle East that backed the Palestinian cause, and they did apparently catch both the Russians and the Iranians and the Syrians off guard, with this maneuver in recent days. At least that’s what seems to be the case, but I’m sure that this is an Israel, U.S., and Turkish operation. Turkey has its own issues in this with the Kurds in Syria, for Israel, this is standard fare, overthrow governments in the neighborhood, expand the war, draw the United States in, and the U.S. is always available at Israel’s behest, to play games and expand wars.
