Heritage and Roots: Charles Malik’s Role in Shaping the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
December 11, 2024Charles Malik was possibly Lebanon’s greatest statesman.
He was selected to represent Lebanon at the founding conference of the United Nations in DSan Francisco on the 25th of April 1945 and Lebanon’s first Ambassador to the United States.
He was selected by first lady Elanor Roosevelt to join a select team to draft the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and wrote the preamble that was adopted by the Commission and published on the 10th of December 1948.
He was an academic, diplomat, philosopher, and politician.
We honour his memory on the 76th anniversary of the Declaration and remind the world of Lebanon’s undeniable sovereign rights as a founding member of the United Nations despite what Netanyahu might claim – that we are an entity and not an independent state.
