Daizy Gedeon: Today is a very good day for Lebanon. Last week on the 9th of January, it was also a day to celebrate when the Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Army, Joseph Aoun, was elected president of the Republic. Well, today the president is going to call in members of the political parties and members of Parliament to sit down with them and consult on the next biggest step for Lebanon, and that is election or selection of the next Prime Minister of Lebanon. The current incumbent Prime Minister is Najib Mikati. He will of course, and is of course standing and putting forward his name for the candidacy of Prime Minister. The problem with Najib Mikati, is he represents the old guard, the old political system, the system that brought Lebanon to the decay and degeneration of the state that we are witnessing and have witnessed for the last five years.
So, we don’t want Najib Mikati as the next Prime Minister. We had two other candidates who represented potential change for Lebanon and good candidacy for prime ministership. They were Fouad Makhzoumi, a tycoon, a Lebanese billionaire who was supported by members of the opposition bloc, the majority of the Opposition bloc, as well as Ibrahim Mneimneh, a member of the Change Reform Bloc in Lebanon. However, those two candidates have in the last 12 hours withdrawn from the race for the prime ministership. Instead, they have put their support and those who supported them, have aligned to put their support behind a new candidate, Nawaf Salam. Nawaf Salam is currently serving as the president of the International Court of Justice in The Hague. Nawaf Salam is a man who stands for justice, who believes in justice, who believes in law, and who believes in Lebanon.
He has written many essays and documents and papers on his vision for Lebanon, whilst he is president of the International Court of Justice. It is his dream to serve Lebanon and as someone who is clean and above discrimination, above criticism, above reproach. This is the candidate that all Lebanese should get behind because what he represents aligned with Joseph Aoun as president and Nawaz Salam as Prime Minister, is the future of a Lebanon, we can all get behind and believe in. It represents justice and security and international respect for law, order and humanity. So, for this reason, it is a great day for Lebanon, and we can only pray that the process over the next 24 to 48 hours results in the selection and success of Nawaf Salam as the next Prime Minister of Lebanon. Let’s all celebrate.
