Over 100,000 Protesters March in London: Demanding Ceasefire and Freedom for Palestine
January 20, 2025Over 100,000 protesters gathered in Central London for a pro-Palestine march despite stringent restrictions by the Met Police which imposed last minute restrictions banning protesters from marching towards the headquarters of the BBC, despite organisers approving the route with the police months in advance.
The demonstration took place ahead of the ceasefire deal which began in Gaza on Sunday.
Organisers denied claims made by the Met that protesters had forced their way through a police cordon to march towards the BBC after ending their protest in Whitehall.
The police said 77 arrests were made during Saturday’s protest, including Chris Nineham, the vice-chair of the Stop the War Coalition, who served as the chief steward for the national protest for Palestine.
The Met said on Sunday that 24 people had been released on bail, while 48 remained in custody. Ten people charged are due to appear in court in the coming days.
Footage taken by Middle East Eye showed police officers in riot gear surrounding Nineham and bundling him into the back of a police van.
Crowds could be heard shouting “shame on you” and “free, free Palestine” at the police as they detained Nineham.
