AJ Plus: Trump Threatens to Block South Africa Aid Over False ‘Racist’ Claims—What’s the Israel Connection?
February 8, 2025U.S. President Donald Trump is threatening to withhold aid to South Africa – most of which is for HIV/AIDS prevention – based on claims that the government is “confiscating land,” an apparent reference to a new law on land redistribution.
South Africa is sometimes called the most unequal country in the world: 64% of its Black citizens are living in poverty, and most of the country’s viable land is in the hands of a white minority, who make up just 7% of the population. A new law backed by President Cyril Ramaphosa would allow the government to seize land without compensation if it is not being developed or if it is in the “public interest.” The law is an attempt to strengthen post-apartheid land redistribution efforts, but Trump allies, including Elon Musk, have called it racist.
Critics say Trump’s attack on South Africa may be retaliation for leading the genocide case against U.S. ally Israel at the International Court of Justice. Several other countries have now joined the case as well, including Spain, Mexico and Colombia.
