France 24 reporter: Here in southern Lebanon, near the border with Israel. Residents eagerly wait to return home after months of displacement, on the eve of Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon.
Resident 1: We have been here since January 27th, waiting to go back to our village, and everyone keeps promising us and promising us.
Resident 2: Fear or no fear, with problems or no problems, we want to go into our village.
Resident 3: They promised us that on the 18th of the month. So we waited until the 18th so that we can go back into our village.
France 24 reporter: But the timing of their homecoming is not yet guaranteed. The US France brokered deal in late November required Israel to withdraw from southern Lebanon and the removal of Hezbollah fighters and weaponry from there too. But despite pushback from Beirut, Israeli forces are poised to miss its Tuesday withdrawal deadline for the second time, with the IDF confirming it would remain in five strategic points in southern Lebanon. It said the decision was taken so it can continue to defend its residents and ensure no immediate threat. It comes as Israel has continued to carry out strikes on Lebanon, with the military saying it’s found and killed a Hamas commander.
Israeli anchor: Near Saida this morning, our air force, using intelligence, struck and eliminated the terrorist Mohammad Shaheen. Shaheen was head of Hamas’s operations department in Lebanon. He recently planned terror attacks directed and funded by Iran from Lebanese territory against our people.
France 24 reporter: Lebanon’s president has said it won’t accept a single Israeli remaining on Lebanese territory, and that it’s working diplomatically to achieve a full withdrawal. Hezbollah’s chief Naim Kassem said Sunday it’s Beirut’s responsibility to ensure the deadline is met. Over 100,000 people remain internally displaced in Lebanon, according to the UN’s migration agency.
