ABC news anchor: Israel’s military has recently trialed a remote weapon system manufactured by an Australian defense company. The ABC has been told that counter drone product, which is marked as lethal, was exported from a US subsidiary of Canberra based business EOS. Defense correspondent Andrew Greene joins us now. Andrew, what can you tell us about this product and why Israel’s military is interested in it?
Andrew Greene: What we’ve uncovered is that earlier this year, the Israeli military did a demonstration, a series of trials on counter drone technology mainly built and designed in Israel. But among the products being examined by Israeli defense officials was what’s known as the R 400. It’s designed here in Canberra and is marketed as a lethal counter drone product. It can strike targets up to two kilometers away and is described as high precision. It fires from a 30 millimeter cannon. Now, details of this demonstration really haven’t been made public, but in company documents submitted to the Australian Stock Exchange, it’s clear that EOS demonstrated this lethal product at an Israeli event earlier this year. So the company itself is not commenting, and the Defense Department still insists that Australia is not exporting any weapons directly to Israel or any ammunition.
Female reporter: Prime Minister, an Australian designed weapons system has been trialed by Israel’s defense force. Will your government move to prevent the sale of any lethal EOS product to Israel?
PM Albanese: We do not sell arms to Israel.
Female reporter:But you sell the parts that have been…
PM Albanese: We do not sell arms to Israel, I’m aware of the report that you referred to. We looked in this matter. The companies confirmed with the Department of Defense. The particular system was not exported from Australia. Australia does not export arms to Israel.
