Daizy Gedeon: Australia has long stood for fairness, compassion, and respect for human rights. But today, one of our political leaders, Peter Dutton, in fact the entire Liberal Party is challenging these fundamental values. Tomorrow as more than 18 million people come out to vote in the federal elections, I have grave fears that many Australians will ignore the only issue that we should be voting on and for and that is the fight to protect our humanity. Issues such as economy, jobs, immigration, cost of living, cost of housing, interest rates, education, environment, etc. are all important but they are not more important than saving our souls and getting our country back on track and aligned with our values. The stance that Peter Dutton has taken on Palestinians in Palestine, is a stance against humanity. It is a stance against the institutions that we have held so dear that protect all of our basic human rights. His alignment with Israel and its genocidal war against the Palestinian people, against allowing fundamental aid into Gaza to ensure the 2.1 million civilians that are left after more than one and a half years of destruction and devastation is unconscionable and should put all of us on alert as to how the Liberal Party will attempt to take away our human rights here in Australia if they win. Look at the actions and statements he has made already, clearly outlining his attitude and beliefs about human rights and international law. Dutton has deeply opposed the International Criminal Court’s efforts to investigate alleged war crimes committed by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, labeling such actions ‘repugnant’ and an ‘abomination.’ Yet, he remained silent about the same court investigating Palestinian leaders. When thousands of Palestinian civilians fled the devastation of war, seeking refuge, Peter Dutton cast suspicion upon them, advocating stricter visa vetting, implying they pose inherent threats to Australia’s safety. He falsely claimed Palestinians were ‘fast-tracked’ to Australian citizenship, stoking unfounded fears and division. His rhetoric has drawn widespread condemnation for fueling racism and prejudice. More recently he vehemently opposed the International Criminal Court’s arrest warrants against Benjamin Netanyahu and called the ICC prosecutor’s move a “terrible decision” urging the Australian government to publicly condemn it. He even warned that Australia should “cut ties” with the ICC rather than enforce any warrant against the Israeli leader. How can we trust a leader like this who throws out international humanitarian law to serve his own vested interests. He is completely backed by the Zionist movement in Australia and is doing their bidding for them. Not for you, not me or Australians, any Australians. He could care less about Aussies. We are last on his list of priorities. Dutton’s stance doesn’t reflect the Australia we know and love—a nation built on multiculturalism, justice, and inclusion. His anti-Palestinian rhetoric undermines these very principles. Australia deserves leaders who unite us, not those who divide. Electing someone with such divisive and discriminatory views as Prime Minister would be tragic—not just for Australian values—but for humanity itself. So, as you go to the polls tomorrow, please think very carefully before voting for the Liberal Party, One Nation or any other party that supports, promotes and advocates for injustice because that’s just not Australian! We are better than that and we deserve a government that will honour and protect our values first and foremost.
