DemocracyNow.org | Peter Beinart & Jewish Currents React: Zohran Mamdani’s NYC Mayoral Win Shows America Is Waking Up
July 10, 2025
In 2013, U.S. Democrats favored Israel over Palestine by 36 points.
Today, they favor Palestinians over Israel by 38 points.
That’s a 74-point swing in just over a decade.
Even Republicans under 50 now hold a majority negative view of Israel.
This dramatic shift in U.S. public opinion—led by young people—just helped Zohran Mamdani, a proudly pro-Palestine candidate, win big in New York City’s Democratic primary.
The future belongs to those who speak truth and stand for justice. And more and more Americans are choosing to stand with Palestine.

Zohran Mamdani: What we have been told about the consent for this genocide is not true. So many of the Jewish New Yorkers here are struggling through heartbreak and mourning of October 7th. And they have made it very clear that do not use their heartbreak, their tragedy as the justification for the genocide of Palestinians.
Peter Beinart: One of the reasons people thought Mamdani couldn’t win was they had a set of assumptions about what was politically possible on the question of Israel Palestine that are just really out of date if you look at public opinion. I’m not sure there’s any political issue in the United States perhaps other than gay marriage over the last couple of decades where public opinion has shifted as fast as it is shifting on Israel Palestine. Just to give an example, in 2013, Democrats favored Israel over the Palestinians by 36 points. Today, they favor the Palestinians over Israel by 38 points. Even young Republicans, even Republicans under the age of 50, now a majority of them have a negative view of Israel. So, what Mamdani is doing is revealing a dramatic shift that’s taking place being led by young people, but not only among young people that’s happening in New York and across the country.
Zohran Mamdani: These New Yorkers and so many across the state are saying the time is now for a ceasefire. And if you’re not calling for it, you’re supporting a genocide.
