Pope Leo Calls on Hezbollah to Drop Weapons and Embrace Dialogue, Says The National
December 5, 2025
During his visit to Beirut, Pope Leo delivered a message few leaders dare to say out loud:
Violence cannot be the path forward — not from Hezbollah, not from anyone.
A reminder that Lebanon’s future cannot be built on rocket fire, assassinations, or endless retaliation.
Behind the scenes, the Church is pushing for dialogue, de-escalation, and dignity for all communities — a vision that feels almost impossible amid today’s headlines.
But his message cuts through the noise:
If Lebanon is to survive, its leaders must choose the courage of peace over the comfort of conflict.

Pope Leo XIV: Clearly, the church’s proposal is that they (Hezbollah) lay down their weapons, and seek dialogue. But beyond this I prefer not to comment on this context. Our work mainly is not something we declare publicly in the streets. It is somewhat behind the scenes. It is something (negotiating between the parties) that we have already done and will continue to do in order to try to persuade the parties to lay down their weapons and violence and to come together at the dialogue table, to seek answers and solutions that are non-violent but can be more effective and better for everyone.
