UN’s Top Court Opens Landmark Genocide Case Against Myanmar Over Rohingya Atrocities
January 14, 2026
The UN’s highest court has opened a landmark case against Myanmar over crimes committed against the Rohingya people mass killings, forced displacement, and the systematic erasure of an entire community.
For years, survivors warned the world.
For years, governments issued statements instead of consequences.
Now, the case is on record.
It’s about whether international law still means anything when entire populations are destroyed.
And whether justice will finally reach those who were hunted, burned out of their homes, and erased from their land.
There is no excuse for looking away. SHARE.

The UN’s top court is hearing a genocide caseagainst Myanmar.
Myanmar’s military is accused of carrying out a campaign of mass killings, rape and human rights abuses against Rohingya Muslims.
Dawda Jallow: It is not about esoteric issues of international law. It is about real people, real stories, and real group of human beings. The Rohingya of Myanmar. They have been targeted for destruction.
The legal actions stems from a 2017 military offensive that forced around 730,000 Rohingya to flee persecution to neighbouring Bangladesh.
The case brought to the ICJ by Gambia is the court’s first major trial in over a decade.
Dawda Jallow: We did not bring this case lightly. We brought this case after reviewing credible reports of the most brutal and vicious violations imaginable inflicted upon the vulnerable group that had been dehumanized and persecuted for many years.
Myanmar has described its actions as a legitimate counter-terrorism response denying allegations of genocide.
Rohingya refugees say they hope the case will deliver justice and accountability.
Monaira: I would like to mention that this time we don’t just hope to get justice, we demand it and we would like to ask the court to take the action against the Myanmar dictators, the leaders of the Myanmar military who committed the genocide. They have to be accountable and they should be punished. So this time we want to see a real output from the court and actions.
