From Zero to Hero: How Education Transformed the Lives of Refugee Children in Beirut
February 7, 2026
In Beirut, Lebanon, Syrian refugees are using an unlikely tool to fight back against the trauma of war: Cricket.
@alsamaproject started as a mission by former McKinsey & Company London partner Richard Verity, his wife, German journalist and author, Meike Ziervogel, and their Syrian partner Kadria Hussein in 2020 when they realized they hadn’t yet had the impact they wanted on the world.
Today, over 1,000 students are enrolled in Alsama, fast-tracking their way from total illiteracy to university-bound in just six years.
From “zero to hero” — watch our special report on the students proving that the sky – AlSama – is the limit.
