As Israeli strikes continue across South Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, another crisis is unfolding at home.
Two weeks ago, thousands of teachers and retired army veterans gathered outside Parliament in Beirut. They say they came peacefully, asking for their rights. Some were met with force.
Six years after Lebanon’s economic collapse, public sector salaries have been gutted by inflation and currency devaluation. A retired soldier’s family now survives on around $350 a month. A secondary school teacher earns roughly the same amount.
They say they are not asking for luxury – just enough to live with dignity. So when Parliament passed the 2026 budget without meaningful salary adjustments, hope turned into anger.
In this special episode of Reel Talk, our reporter Layla Makdisi spoke to the teachers and veterans who once formed the backbone of the state, and who now say they are fighting for survival.
