Remembering Tom Hurndall, British Photographer Killed in Gaza 23 Years Ago
April 12, 2026
On this day, 23 years ago in Gaza, British photography student Tom Hurndall was shot in the head by an Israeli soldier while attempting to move Palestinian children out of harm’s way during clashes in the Rafah area.
Hurndall, 21 at the time, fell into a coma and died nine months later from his injuries.
A volunteer with the International Solidarity Movement, he was in Gaza documenting daily life under occupation, using photography to capture the realities faced by Palestinians.
His killing later led to the conviction of the Israeli soldier responsible, in a rare case of accountability.
