There are no words for this kind of cruelty. While Brazilian humanitarian Thiago Ávila is being held in isolation in an Israeli prison, his mother, Teresa Regina de Ávila e Silva, has passed away back home in Brasília.
Thiago was kidnapped by the Israeli Navy in international waters on April 29, 2026, while leading a aid flotilla to Gaza. Since then, he’s been beaten, interrogated for hours, and kept in total isolation. Because the military is refusing him any contact with the outside world, Thiago doesn’t even know his mother is gone.
The Brazilian government and international human rights bodies are demanding his immediate release so he can at least mourn with his family. How much more does one man have to lose for the crime of wanting to deliver food and medicine?
