They’re worried they might kill 100 people and wrote a bill in Illinois to absolve them if they do. It’s called Illinois Senate Bill 3444. The bill defines a critical harm as a death or serious injury of 100 people caused by an AI model, or $1 billion in property damage. And it says the AI company cannot be held liable for that harm. As long as they posted a safety protocol on their website first and aren’t deemed reckless in following it. That’s the bar. Publish a document, don’t intentionally cause harm. And get a free pass for killing 100 people. And the crazy thing is that document’s already required because of a law that I wrote and passed. I’m Alex Boris, computer scientist, New York state legislator, and author of the strongest AI safety law in the country. Recently, OpenAI’s marketing department has been working hard, but their lobbyists are working even harder. Don’t believe the slick marketing. This is what they really want. They write the rules, grade their own homework, and if 100 people die, whoops. Nobody forced OpenAI to lobby for this. They showed up and asked for this on their own accord. The bill’s sponsor even said this was an OpenAI initiative. I’m running for Congress in New York 12 to regulate AI at the federal level.
