Lebanese Australians have watched their families and homeland endure widespread destruction as they receive what they describe as near-total silence from the Australian government.
I ask Senator Shoebridge in this episode of Reel Talk, what this silence means? Does it reflect deeper political priorities, and a decimation of the Lebanon-Australian diplomatic relationship?
Shoebridge sheds light on the growing call for the Australian Labor Party to take stronger action, including sanctions, suspension of defence ties, and diplomatic pressure, urging the cancellation of weapons contracts and a firm diplomatic stance
He also argues that the inaction persists due to concerns over international political pressure and personal relationship with corporations.

And then Palestinian kids getting arrested and going to prison for throwing stones. That’s apartheid, a legalized system of racial discrimination. I asked Netanyahu’s fuckin propaganda master, thinking I was going to catch him up. How could there be a mandatory minimum jail sentence for stone throwing yet Israelis could carry assault rifles. This motherfucker proceeded to tell me: “Well. you know, stones could be very big”. I said, okay, we’re not having a real conversation. And why the fuck am I talking to you? I was hanging with one of my oldest friends the other day. Our fathers were best friends. He’s a Jewish civil rights attorney now, works with Jewish Voices for peace. He’s very anti-racist and I have many people in my life like that. It just reminded me that, man, you can’t fall into the trap of conflating all Jewish people with Israel. That’s the trap. So when you use terms like the Jews disparagingly and just general anti-Semitism, you damage all valid criticisms of Israel. That’s doing Netanyahu’s work for him because his finesse is making Israel equal to all Jewish people. So a criticism of Israel is a criticism of all Jewish people. But Jewish people are not a monolith. Israel is a state, it’s not an ethnicity. To be anti-racist, you gotta reject all xenophobia every time. You can’t dismantle the master’s house using the master’s tools. I wrote an essay about when I found out my therapist was a Zionist. Oh, man. Comment, subscribe to read it. Sheesh.
