USS Liberty Survivor Burns Israeli Flag Says Americans Should Fight for Their Country Not Israel

Nearly six decades after the attack on the USS Liberty, survivor and U.S. Navy veteran Phil Tourney is still demanding accountability.
On July 4, Tourney burned an Israeli flag to honor the 34 American servicemen killed on June 8, 1967, when Israeli forces attacked the clearly marked U.S. Navy intelligence ship in international waters during the Six-Day War. Israel has long maintained the attack was a tragic case of mistaken identity, a conclusion accepted by successive U.S. governments, while many survivors, including Tourney, have continued to reject that explanation.
As the Israeli flag burned, Tourney said the act was not directed at the American people, but at what he sees as decades of political silence and unwavering support for Israel despite the deaths of American sailors.
Standing in remembrance of those who never came home, Tourney directed his anger at U.S. politicians he believes have placed Israel’s interests above America’s.
“You’re supposed to fight for this country, not Israel,” he declared.
How can a nation ask its veterans to never forget—while expecting them to forget one of the deadliest attacks on a U.S. naval vessel?
Some chapters of history are uncomfortable.
That doesn’t make them any less real.
