Gaza Aid Worker Mohammed Al-Wahidi Killed Hours Before Organizing World Cup Screening
July 8, 2026
GAZA CITY — An Israeli airstrike in the Sabra neighborhood of Gaza City on Tuesday evening killed Mohammed al-Wahidi, a prominent community figure and public relations director for the Egyptian Relief Committee. The drone strike hit a vehicle less than an hour before kickoff of the highly anticipated Egypt-Argentina World Cup match—an event al-Wahidi had just finished organizing public screenings for across the enclave to offer displaced civilians a brief respite from the war.
The attack also claimed the lives of three other civilians nearby, including taxi driver Ahmed Daghmush, 33, and two young brothers—10-year-old Hamza al-Deri and 8-year-old Fari al-Deri—who were walking home after playing football. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) later stated that al-Wahidi was “not the target” of the strike and that they were reviewing the incident. Local residents and human rights groups condemned the bombing, noting the bitter irony that the community’s organizer was killed just as thousands of children and families gathered on the ruins of Gaza to watch the match.
