Tech workers and human rights defenders completely hijacked the UN’s AI Summit to drag the corporate elite into the light. Amazon VP Werner Vogels thought he was going to deliver a comfortable speech about digital responsibility, but he was met with a wall of resistance over Amazon’s direct complicity in the destruction of Palestine.
Under Project Nimbus, Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Google are providing advanced data infrastructure and machine learning capabilities that keep the Israeli military machine operational. Activists pointed out the sickening irony of hosting a global summit on ethical AI while simultaneously licensing algorithms that dictate who lives and dies in Gaza’s refugee camps.
