Most people think Waze is just a convenient app to avoid traffic. But underneath the colorful interface lies a massive, highly integrated surveillance pipeline.
Legally, Waze is an Israeli company. Its terms of service state that it is governed by Israeli law and any legal disputes go straight to Tel Aviv courts.
A co-founder of Waze served in Unit 8200—Israel’s elite military intelligence branch and version of the NSA.
This is the exact same military apparatus that used Google Photos to build facial recognition databases to ID Gazans (NYT, 2024), and stored millions of intercepted civilian calls on Microsoft servers (Guardian, 2025).
Waze logs your precise location data even when the app is completely closed.
Waze corporate denies sharing data with governments, but when an app is built, managed, and legally tethered to an occupying surveillance state, “denials” are just corporate PR. Your daily commute is being mapped, tracked, and logged by the same ecosystem fueling a digital panopticon.

Realistically, unless you’re a powerful person this doesn’t matter. If the average person uses Waze for his yearly beach trip with family to Florida then there’s no issue. Let’s not get schizophrenic
