Karim Khan Says U.S. Pressured ICC Over Israel Warrants, Claims Family Was Threatened

Karim Khan, a British International Human Rights Lawyer and King’s Counsel, spent years pursuing arrest warrants against Israeli leaders for alleged war crimes in Gaza. Now, removed from his post as ICC Chief Prosecutor, he’s speaking out about what came before his downfall.
In a new interview, Khan describes a sustained campaign of pressure and intimidation tied directly to his Netanyahu and Gallant warrants – including, he says, a direct threat: oppose Israel, and your family becomes a target.
He references contact from Senator Marco Rubio and Senator Mitch McConnell. Reflecting on the toll of it all, Khan says: “What’s liberating is accepting mortality.”
Khan was formally removed by the ICC’s Assembly of States Parties this year following misconduct proceedings – a decision his legal team calls political retaliation for pursuing the Israel case, noting that a panel of judicial experts had unanimously found the misconduct allegations against him unsubstantiated.
The US sanctioned Khan in 2025 over the same warrants.
