AN “ECOCIDE” IN SOUTHERN LEBANON A conservationist has described the recent wildfires in southern Lebanon as an “ecocide,” that Israeli forces have used flares to deliberately ignite fires. The Guardian’s William Christou reports from Beirut on a pattern of attacks affecting Lebanon’s woodlands. Emergency services, residents, and environmental groups describe the destruction as part of a longstanding Israeli practice of targeting Lebanon’s natural environment and making parts of the country increasingly uninhabitable. The Israeli military says its operations are conducted with precautionary measures intended to minimise harm to civilians and the environment.
