Basketball Australia is close to signing a national deal with Pixellot — an Israeli company with links to the IDF, already rolling out AI cameras at basketball venues across the country — to automatically record junior games. Thousands of children could be exposed. No independent oversight required. Just always-on cameras capturing children’s faces, movements, routines, and patterns, uploaded to the cloud.
A law professor at ANU put it plainly: this isn’t just a photo of a kid playing basketball. It’s a face, a uniform, a venue, a time, a routine — a data trail. A former police officer says he’s been flooded with terrified parents who had no idea this was happening, warning that these kinds of images are exactly what predators collect and that AI can manipulate them further.
To be clear: there’s no evidence this specific basketball system is a surveillance tool, or that it’s used by the Israeli military in Gaza. But Pixellot’s founders come out of Israeli intelligence backgrounds, and this is landing amid growing global scrutiny of Israeli-linked AI and surveillance technology more broadly.
Parents deserve to know exactly who’s collecting their children’s data, and why, before a contract gets quietly signed.
