John C. Reilly said the thing that shouldn’t need saying out loud: caring about other people isn’t a weakness to be trained out of you. It’s the entire reason civilization works.
He was responding to Elon Musk’s “empathy exploit” theory — the idea that Western societies are committing “civilizational suicide” by caring too much about people outside their own group. Reilly’s answer was simple: “We’re not an alligator trying to just get the next fish. We’re human beings. We can relate to something that’s not us — that’s a superpower.”
Think about what it says when the richest man on Earth is out here arguing that empathy is the bug, not the feature. That caring less is the upgrade.
“Do unto others” isn’t complicated. It’s just inconvenient for people who’ve built an entire worldview around not having to.
“It’s crazy that we have to argue for these things right now.”
