Lula Accuses Trump and Netanyahu of Meddling in Brazil’s 2026 Presidential Election
September 22, 2026
“STAY OUT OF BRAZIL.”
Brazil goes to the polls in October. Trump has already slapped 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods explicitly tied to protecting Jair Bolsonaro — a man convicted of plotting a coup to keep Lula out of power. The White House officially hosted his son and current candidate, Flávio Bolsonaro, in May. And Netanyahu called him “a friend and champion.”
Two foreign leaders — one running a trade war to punish a democracy’s own courts, the other publicly endorsing his preferred candidate — both leaning on the scale of another country’s election.
Lula isn’t whispering about it. He’s taking it straight to the UN General Assembly, face to face with Trump, and saying it plainly: stay out. Brazil’s election belongs to Brazilians, not to tariffs, not to endorsements, not to foreign leaders picking their favorite candidate and trying to buy the outcome.
Sovereignty isn’t negotiable. Neither is democracy.

The United States is reportedly funding trips to Washington for Brazilian journalists. The goal to train them on how to effectively criticize Brazilian President Lula da Silva and promote far right candidate Flavio Bolsonaro, according to investigative journalist Leandro Demery. But that’s just one part of a much bigger battle. In October, Brazil will hold its presidential election. Lula is running for a fourth term, and his main rival is Flavia Bolsonaro. His father, Jerry Bolsonaro, led Brazil from 2019 to 2022. He was later convicted of attempting a coup that was largely compared to the January 6th attack on the US Capitol. Israel, Argentina’s military and the United States have already openly announced endorsing Bolsonaro.
Netanyahu: Flavio my friend. I want to congratulate you on the official launching of your campaign. You’re a great champion of Brazil. You’re a great champion of the friendship between our peoples. And I know that you bring Brazil to greater and greater heights.
The Bolsonaro family is close to the MAGA movement. Flavio has already promised to turn Brazil into an unconditional US ally, and Trump received him at the white House last May. Lula currently lead in several opinion polls, but back in 2018, he was also ahead by around 20 points until Brazil’s judiciary imprisoned him. Clearing the way for Bolsonaro to win the presidency. On top of that, direct economic and diplomatic pressure has recently piled up. For example, Trump imposed a new round of tariffs on Brazilian goods in the middle of the campaign, making clear we’d only remove them if Brazil aligned with his foreign policy. In recent weeks, the US has also tried to send officials to question the integrity of the elections. But Brazil denied them visas and asked Washington to stay out of the election. The underlying reason isn’t just economic. Brazil is the most populous, largest and richest country in Latin America. It is part of BRICs, has strong ties with China, and supports the de-dollarization of global markets. It represents an independent model of governance that Washington has historically not tolerated in its Western Hemisphere “backyard” in the name of the Monroe Doctrine.
