13-Year-Old Palestinian Girl in Gaza Says She Is Fed Up With Life Amid Hunger, Airstrikes and Death
October 6, 2026“I’M FED UP OF LIFE”
Those are the words of a 13-year-old girl.
Lara al-Masri should be worrying about school, friends, growing up. Instead, she’s learned to live alongside death. She shares her tent with rats. She goes to sleep hungry. She hears airstrikes near the place she’s supposed to feel safe. And she carries the unbearable weight of losing her father, a grief no child should have to hold.
Before the war, Lara had a home in Beit Lahia. A childhood. A future that looked like something. Now she’s just one more child in an overcrowded displacement camp in Gaza City, trying to survive a day most adults couldn’t endure.
For an entire summer, she let BBC Eye witness her life, not because she wanted sympathy, but because she wanted the world to actually see her. To see what’s being done to children like her, every single day, while the world watches and calls it “conflict.”
When a child tells you she’s fed up of life, that’s not a headline. That’s a warning. That’s a generation being broken in front of us and still, so many choose to look away.
How many more Laras have to say these words before this stops?

English Script:
Emir Nader: Meet 13 year old Lara, who lives in a displacement camp in Gaza City. SUnicef says nearly all children in Gaza require urgent mental health and psychosocial support. For children here, death feels like an imminent danger. Her family says Maamoun was shot near a food distribution center last year. Over 1300 were killed trying to find food during 2025 summer. But violence isn’t Lara’s only worry. Rodents have infested camps across Gaza. Her friend’s father was recently bitten by a weasel. The United Nations said in April that rodents and pests are frequently visible in 81% of displacement camps. Israel’s military has carried out a raid near Lara’s school. At least four Palestinians were killed, two of them children. Israel’s military said it was capturing a Hamas official in a ground operation, and that it regrets any harm to civilians. Lara wasn’t there. Her mum had kept her home to celebrate her birthday. Despite the war’s horrors, Lara and her family still find things to smile about.
