Thousands of students marched through Rio de Janeiro, carrying an image of Flávio Bolsonaro photoshopped as Adolf Hitler, chanting “Never again Bolsonaro” ahead of the presidential runoff.
Signs read “Yankee imperialism out” — a direct response to the Trump administration’s 50% tariffs on Brazilian goods and sanctions on a Brazilian Supreme Court justice, both explicitly tied to defending Jair Bolsonaro, the former president now serving 27 years for attempting a coup.
One 20-year-old literature student put it plainly: “If Bolsonaro wins, Brazil will become a colony of the United States.”
This is a generation that watched a foreign government try to bend their democracy to protect one family’s political survival and showed up by the thousands to say no.
