Javier Bardem Says Losing Jobs Is Irrelevant Compared With Gaza Suffering
October 12, 2026
On the Emmys red carpet, Bardem wore a keffiyeh and turned every question about his own nomination into one about Gaza. Asked about the career cost of speaking out, he didn’t flinch: “I know what I’m doing. I know what I can bring. It’s okay. ‘Me not getting jobs is absolutely irrelevant’ compared to what is going on there. It’s that easy.”
Then he named the silence around him: “Their silence, because they’re afraid, is their support to the genocide.”
He’s one of more than 4,000 film workers, including Emma Stone, Joaquin Phoenix and Mark Ruffalo, who signed the Film Workers for Palestine pledge not to work with Israeli film institutions they say are complicit in what’s happening in Gaza. He has since stressed that the pledge targets companies and institutions, not individuals, and doesn’t discriminate based on nationality, race, religion or gender.
An A-list actor with a nomination on the line chose the cause over the campaign. That’s what it looks like to put principles above profit.
