Remembering Palestinian Hero Haj Ziad Abu Hali, Who Faced Israeli Forces in Hebron
October 12, 2026A PALESTINIAN HERO.
Palestinian Elder and Nonviolent Activist, Hebron
No weapon. No shield. A kuffiyeh, a raised hand, and the nerve to stand between armed soldiers and the young people they were firing at.
That was Haj Ziad Abu Halil, a tribal elder from Dura near Hebron, filmed again and again putting his body in the line of fire at peaceful marches. “We don’t want you to shoot anyone, we don’t want you to kill anyone,” he told soldiers in one video. “This is a nonviolent procession, why do you keep shooting at them?”
In October 2024, at 66, he was beaten to death during an Israeli raid on his home, according to Palestinian officials, rights groups and witnesses. A large crowd marched at his funeral chanting against the occupation.
He never carried anything but his own body, and he used it to protect other people’s children.
