Diana Moukalled: Hezbollah Owes South Lebanon Answers as Explosives Seizure Revives Fears
October 14, 2026
“ACCOUNTABILITY OF HEZBOLLAH IS A MUST”
Hundreds of kilograms of explosives, including C4, were seized at a checkpoint in Dahr al-Baidar. Two suspected Hezbollah members were arrested. And Lebanon is asking the questions it has asked before.
Diana Moukalled, Lebanese journalist at Daraj Media, says the seizure recalls a series of assassinations over the last two decades that used the same kind of material, in a country where Hezbollah and its weapons operate openly. Even Prime Minister Nawaf Salam has acknowledged that C4 was used in some of Lebanon’s most infamous political assassinations.
Her points:
Hezbollah hasn’t denied responsibility. A journalist close to the party said the state has no right to confiscate the explosives.
MP Ibrahim al-Moussawi says Hezbollah never joined a civil war or used its weapons in internal conflicts. Moukalled asks who he’s talking to, and points to May 2008, when Hezbollah and its allies took over parts of Beirut, to Rafik Hariri’s assassination, to the Special Tribunal’s conviction of Salim Ayyash, and to the party’s role in Syria’s war.
For 30 years, southerners were told Israel was weaker than a spider’s web, and that the resistance had built deterrence to protect them. Today Israel is back on Lebanese land, homes and livelihoods are destroyed, and thousands of families still can’t go home.
Hezbollah is politically responsible for its disastrous military choices, and instead of reviewing them, it’s defending the transport of explosives.
Southerners have a right to ask what those choices cost them. All Lebanese have a right to ask about explosives moving on their roads. And accountability, she says, is a must for any way out of this crisis.
