Think about what Berlin protesters are saying. An Israeli officer, they claim, was sent to teach German police how to “hurt and harm” people and arrest them violently. And they say that’s why demonstrators are ending up in the hospital.
“Can you imagine IDF special soldiers actually teaching our police officers how to arrest people violently?”
That’s the speaker’s claim, and the picture it paints is hard to ignore. An army accused of war crimes in Gaza, passing on its methods to the police of a European democracy, and those methods turned on people who show up to protest the war.
Germany’s government has been deepening its military, police and security ties with Israel, and opposition lawmakers have been pressing it in the Bundestag to explain exactly what those ties include. Meanwhile, at home, people who chant for Palestinian freedom get beaten, arrested and threatened with lawsuits.
That’s what “never again” has turned into: crushing protest against genocide with help from the army accused of it.
No democracy. No human rights. Just a state that imports repression and calls it security.
Who is training whom, and for what? Germany owes its citizens an answer.
