Obama Mocks Trump’s Whole-of-Government Reaction to His “Saddam Hussein Opened a Cheesecake Factory” Joke
October 29, 2026
Former President Barack Obama delivered a scathing critique at a Georgia campaign rally, slamming Donald Trump and his administration for fixating on a joke rather than addressing the economy.
After Obama joked that Trump’s $900 million White House renovations looked like “Saddam Hussein opened a Cheesecake Factory,” the Trump administration spent days responding, even dispatching Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to stage a response outside a Washington location.
The Focus: Obama took the administration to task, pointing out the absurdity of utilizing the nation’s chief economic officer for restaurant publicity stunts while everyday families struggle with high food and restaurant costs.
️ “These are not serious people,” Obama told the crowd. “They don’t have solutions to actual problems, so they’d rather have the media and you talking about the Cheesecake Factory.”
