Analyst: U.S. Bombed Iran Despite Compliance, Seeking Escape From Hormuz Agreement
July 1, 2026
Prof. Jiang Xueqin, political analyst and professor, argues that Washington may have walked into a geopolitical trap of its own making.
He says the U.S. is accusing Iran of violating the Hormuz ceasefire agreement while overlooking Article 5 of the very memorandum it signed, an article he says gives Iran responsibility for arranging the safe passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz during the agreement’s 60-day period.
According to Jiang, Iran’s insistence on managing commercial shipping routes was not a breach of the agreement but an attempt to enforce its own interpretation of the deal. He argues Washington’s military response reflects an effort to move beyond the terms it had previously accepted.
Jiang also points to a sharp decline in commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz—from around 70 vessels a day to roughly 40 over several days—which he says demonstrates the global economic impact of the escalating dispute.
“Iran Just Trapped Washington as Hormuz Deals a Blow to Pax Americana”, he said.
